Uniting Past, Present, and Future

Wonder Spokane has revitalized an entire square block on the north bank of the Spokane River. Through a combination of renovations and new construction, the historic Spokane Bakery has been repurposed as a 21st century gathering and work place while preserving the original architectural facade. The Wonder Building is listed on the Spokane Register of Historic Places and much effort went into preserving and restoring architectural features of the original bakery. In the past decade, the North Bank has experienced a renaissance, primarily with the development of Kendall Yards. Yet the central business district on the North Bank has remained mostly dormant except for institutions like the Spokane Arena and Flour Mill. Wonder Spokane creates a new vibe on the North Bank, and with ample parking and a direct link to Centennial Trail and Riverfront Park, it is easily accessed from any point in the City.

Wonder Building History

The Wonder Building tells the story of American industrialization in Spokane. The Spokane Bakery was built in 1909 as one of the largest, most modern bread bakeries in the Pacific Northwest, and it made Spokane a leader in commercial bread baking, warehousing, and distribution. The success of the Spokane Bakery forever changed the way people got bread, as baking moved from home to factory. A 1921 advertisement in the Spokane Daily Chronical stated, “You can use the most expensive of ingredients the same as we do . . . but you can’t have facilities that insure good bread. We have facilities that never fail . . .”

A Timeline of Wonder Building History:

Past, Present, and Future

In 1909, a 29-year old German immigrant named David Ackermann bought the site of today’s Wonder Building to build “the largest bakery plant in the northwest . . . [and] to equip the building with the most modern bakery machinery . . .” (Spokesman Review, May 2, 1909). Mr. Ackermann spent $40,000 on the original Spokane Bakery.

By 1917, the Spokane Bakery was very successful, and Mr. Ackermann expanded the capacity to 100,000 loaves of bread per day. Bread was delivered within a 150-mile radius of Spokane.

Building further upon his success, Mr. Ackermann again expanded in 1920 to produce 5,000 loaves per hour! Top brands in the 1920’s were Holsum, Tip-Top, Betsy, Ross and Butternut Breads, Ackermann’s Daily Cakes, and Buttercup Ice Cream.

In 1925 Mr. Ackermann sold his thriving business to Continental Baking Corp. of New York, which wanted to further “Continental Corporation’s policy of nation-wide expansion” (Los Angeles Times, May 8, 1925). Continental Baking added Wonder Bread to the brands it produced.

Although never its official name, the building came to be known as the Wonder Building, and the bakery continued operations under various ownership until 2000. Many residents remarked how much they missed the aroma of fresh-baked bread when operations ceased.

Wonder Spokane, LLC purchased the Wonder Building in 2016 and began major renovations and new construction. Significant aspects of the renovation and construction were: a completely new structural support system, reconstruction of the 2nd story western end of the building destroyed by fire in 1947, a glass atrium above the new market, and a glass and steel addition to each end of the 3rd floor.
